Biography and history of Golden Temple Harmandar Sahib Darbar Sahib AMritsar





The Golden Temple is located in Amritsar, in the northern Punjab of India, near the border with Pakistan. It is the central gurdwara or place of worship for all Sikhs of the world. Its proper name is Harimandar, which means "Temple of God" and is respectfully called Darbar Sahib (meaning "Lord's Court"). Darbar Harimandar Sahib is famous as the Golden Temple due to its unique features.

The Golden Temple is adorned at Sri Amritsar Sahib, the religious land of the Sikhs. The Golden Temple is famous for its golden building. It is the holiest shrine of the Sikhs. It is a two storied building. Maharaja Ranjit Singh built the upper part of the Golden Temple with about four hundred kilos of gold leaves. There are many other temples around the Golden Temple, such as the Durgiana Temple. Sri Guru Ram Das Jee, the fourth Guru of the Sikhs, built the Golden Temple. To the south of the Golden Temple is a garden and Baba Atal Jee's Gurdwara. Guru ka langar is served to twenty thousand people here every day. On special occasions the number of days reaches one lakh. Everyone must cover their head before entering the Gurdwara. Guru Granth Sahib Ji is adorned in Harimandar Sahib during the day and at Akal Takht Sahib at night. Asan is done. The Akal Takht also houses weapons used by Sikh warriors in ancient times. The Akaal Takhat was built by Guru Hargobind sahib jee. The Darbar Sahib has a 450 year old berry tree which has its own religious and historical significance. The weekends are less crowded in the morning.

The shrine is constructed of white marble with gold leaf. It stands in the center of the sarovar, a pool of fresh, clear, reflective water that is fed by the river Ravi, and is said by some to be the source of the river Ganga. Pilgrims and pilgrims bathe in the sacred waters of the sarovar and perform healing which is known for its healing properties. Pilgrims gather inside the Gurudwara to worship, listen to hymns, and listen to the holy recitation of the Guru Granth Sahib jee. The Golden Gurdwara has four doors, welcoming everyone who enters, regardless of caste, class, color or caste.

This Gurdara is built around a sarovar built by Gurru Ram Das jee 1577. Its foundation was laid on 28 December 1588 by Sai Miyan Meer Ji. In 1604, Guru Arjan installed a manuscript of the Adi Granth here and called the place "Ath Sath Tirath".

Two years later, the foundation stone of "Akaal Takhat" was laid by Guru Hargobind Sahib Jee in the year 2000. In addition, the Darbar Sahib building was destroyed during the Afghaan invasions of 1757, 1762 and 1764. Baba Deep Singh Ji was martyred while guarding the Golden Temple during the Afghan invasion.

The Golden Temple is an open house of worship for all men and women, for the life and faith of all classes. It has a square plan with four doors, a circle around the pool. The complex is a collection of buildings around the shrine and the pool. One of them is the Akaal Takhat which is the main center of religious rights of Sikhism. Older buildings include a clock tower, gurdwara committee offices, a museum and a langar. Free Sikh Community runs Nitti Kitchen which serves a simple vegetarian meal to all spectators without any discrimination. Every day more than 100,000 people go to the shrine for worship.
